About Shaumpishuh Statue Committee

We seek to honor with a statue a woman whose key role in the founding of Guilford and Madison, Connecticut, is little known.  Shaumpishuh was the sachem (chief) of the Menuncahtuck band of Quinnipiac who for thousands of years lived on lands that became Guilford.  Shaumpishuh negotiated the agreements between her people and the English colonists, and fought for the rights of her people throughout her life.  A statue of Shaumpishuh in Guilford Center will stand as a symbol of reconciliation, and memorialize the original history of Guilford.   The Guilford Board of Selectmen have approved a site outside the library facing the Green. The image below is an AI generated picture of what the statue may look like (it is not the final statue) alongside plantings used by Native Americans for food, medicine and spiritual purposes.Committee: James Powers, President; Ellen Creane, Secretary; Cheryl Buckley; Courtney Cucinotta, Nipmuc and European descent; Kevin “Red Eagle” Brown, Mohegan ancestry; Michael Bracken, Treasurer.
